Complex ‘Shoulder Replacement Surgery’ Helps Overweight Truck Driver Return to Work Six Months after Accident

A complex shoulder replacement surgery performed at Thumbay Hospital – Dubai has helped a Pakistani truck driver return to work after 6 months of post-op rest and recovery. The 42-year-old truck driver, Jahanzeb Khan Muhammad Siddique, who was at the hospital last week for his check-up, has been declared fit by his surgeon to return to his normal life and resume his job.

It was on 14th April 2017 that Jahanzeb was brought into the Emergency Department of Thumbay Hospital, Dubai, following a road traffic accident while on duty. He was experiencing severe pain in his right shoulder. The debilitating shoulder joint pain caused by a severe comminuted shoulder joint fracture brought a nightmare to the patient and to the surgeon. His high body weight of 156kgs and BMI of 54.67 posed an additional challenge to the doctors.

The challenge before the doctors at Thumbay Hospital was to save the patients shoulder so that the truck driver could return to his daily lives and resume his livelihood. As an expat, Jahanzeb knew that if his shoulder didn’t function normally, he would not be able to return to his heavy motor driving job or any other job, which would eventually force him to leave the country.

The team of specialized surgeons at Thumbay Hospital – Dubai, headed by Dr. Rajesh Garg (MCh, MS; Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon, Thumbay Hospital, Dubai) took up the challenge and after preparing the patient for shoulder surgery, performed replacement of the right shoulder on 23rd April 2017. Dr. Rajesh Garg, with his international expertise, has successfully performed more than 3000 joint replacements surgeries in India and the UAE.

“Starting from the size of the OT table, positioning the patient on that table and general anesthesia itself was a challenging task in the case of this patient, all thanks to his weight. We took almost 4 hours, which is double the usual time taken for the surgery, to give him a successful new shoulder joint,” said Dr. Rajesh Garg.

After 6 months of cooling period which involved rest and a graded progressive physiotherapy, Jahanzeb is finally back to his normal life and work. Back at the hospital for his check-up last week, he said, “Alhamdulillaah! I am now able to move my shoulder freely. I thank the surgeons of Thumbay Hospital – Dubai, for their timely intervention saving my livelihood. Their confidence of a full-recovery kept me optimistic throughout the six months of post-op rest, and here I am today, ready to resume work.”

“By performing this surgery in spite of the challenges it posed, we have once again demonstrated our commitment to the goal: journey of each patient to full independence,” Dr. Rajesh Garg said.

The Ortho Spine center at Thumbay Hospital – Dubai offers expert care in the following areas: Total Joints Replacement and Revision, Arthroscopic Surgery, Sports Related Injuries, Pediatric Orthopedics, Orthopedic Fractures and Trauma (Adult & Children) and Spinal Surgeries. Equipped with trained surgeons who specialize in orthopedics and spine procedures, the specialized center also offers outpatient services. Orthopedic services including surgical procedures are provided 24 x 7.

Varicose Vein Patient Walks Comfortably within 24 Hours of Minimally Invasive, Painless Procedure

A new technology known as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) has enabled a 46-year-old male patient with extensive varicose veins in both lower limbs leave the hospital on the same day of the procedure and start walking comfortably within 24 hours.

The patient, Indian national Mr. Arya Hussain was presented to Thumbay Hospital – Dubai, with bleeding from the dilated veins in right lower limb. He was also having pain and heaviness in the right lower limb, due to his medication condition.

He was examined by Dr. Ashok Gupta, Specialist Vascular Surgeon. Investigations with high-end ultrasound revealed a significant leakage from the valve, in the right thigh region.

In normal cases, such a case could be rectified only by a corrective procedure by the traditional open operative technique. In Thumbay Hospital – Dubai, the availability of the new minimally invasive Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) ruled out open surgery.

The team led by Dr. Ashok Gupta performed the RFA procedure under local anesthesia and sedation. The patient was discharged on the same day. The procedure involved using a catheter that’s heated up by radiofrequency energy to heat the vein and seal it off. Mr. Hussain was able to walk comfortably the very next day.

Speaking about the RFA procedure, Dr. Ashok Gupta said that the procedure involved very little pain and that it was absolutely patient friendly. “Earlier, the only proper treatment for serious varicose veins was “stripping”, wherein an incision was made on the patient’s thigh, and the complete vein removed. This use to be painful and required a few days of hospitalization,” said Dr. Ashok, adding, “RFA causes minimal discomfort after the procedure as well as fewer complications. It does not involve any cutting into the skin or use of invasive equipment. Another major advantage is that patients benefit from less waiting times compared to surgeries.”

He said that the success rate of the procedure was close to 98% worldwide.
