United Arab Emirates February 21, 2017: A 63-year-old woman in Dubai has given birth to a healthy baby girl at Thumbay Hospital on February 19, 2017 at 7.15 am, making her a third time-mum after a year-long IVF treatment.

Last year, the Sri-lankan lady and her Indian husband decided to start a family, but they knew they’d have to deal with a few bumps in the road. To overcome the risks associated with late pregnancies, they saw an in vitro fertilization specialist in Chennai (India) who gave her the go-ahead.

The journey, however, was not an easy one, admits the 63-year-old miracle mum. She was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia [hypertension during pregnancy] and placenta previa [the condition when a baby’s placenta partially or totally covers the opening in the mother’s cervix], following her check-ups at the Thumbay Hospital. By the 36-th week, she complained of bleeding, and was therefore led to an emergency caesarean section.

Overwhelmed with the joy of welcoming her baby four weeks in advance, the new-mom said, “Despite the complications in the case, the hospital staff extended special care and provided round-the clock services to make it a smooth delivery and post-natal care. The baby weighed 2.3-kilogram (5.1-pound) at birth is now doing perfectly well.”

Dr. Jaget Nirmala, Specialist, Obstetrics & Gynecology at Thumbay Hospital Dubai said, “Women who are healthy enough to have a baby in their later years shouldn’t be scared to do so. One should let nature decide. Childbearing at 62-years of age is extremely rare, but not a record. The patient and the baby have responded well to the treatment at our facility and have been doing well.”

The hospital authorities confirmed that the couple will be able to take their newborn home on Feb 21, 2017.

United Arab Emirates, Sharjah: Mirroring a global trend aimed at making medical services more accessible, with high-quality care and reduced hospitalization hours for patients, Thumbay Hospital’s recently launched daycare services concept is fast catching-up in the UAE region. A host of factors, including improved anesthetic and surgical techniques, better patient education, convenience of recuperating at home, state-of-art infrastructure and round-the-clock access to skilled doctors and nursing staff have largely contributed in making the Thumbay Hospital Daycare, Rolla, Sharjah, a sought-after destination for healthcare services.

Mrs. Alia, a Pakistani national, who was suffering from a breast lump had been postponing the surgery for lack of medical leave. But new daycare services that are dramatically changing the way these operations are done, giving women more options, faster treatment, smaller scars, fewer long-term side effects and better cosmetic results proved to be a blessing in disguise for Alia. Her scar-less breast lump excision procedure at Thumbay Hospital Daycare was successfully conducted in less-than three hours’ time. Alia walked into the hospital post work hours at 7 pm, underwent the surgery by 8 pm, and was certified healthy to recuperate at home by 10 pm. That’s not all, she even resumed work the next day. In order to follow-up on her post-surgery recovery, the surgeon also conducted a screening two days later that confirmed Alia was lump-free, hale and hearty.

“Not everyone can afford prolonged post-operative rest, which keeps them away from work and other daily activities. Same-day surgeries get you back to your normal routine from the very next day of the procedure,” said Dr. Ashish Sam Enos, Specialist – Surgery at Thumbay Hospital Day Care. “As all the procedures are well-planned, the patient may directly move to the operating room after registration and will be discharged from the hospital two hours after the surgery,” he added.

Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, vice president of the healthcare division of Thumbay Group said that the surgical procedures at Thumbay Hospital Daycare provided multiple benefits for patients, including lower costs and fewer chances of hospital-acquired infections, in addition to early recovery and less mental stress. “The hospital offers minimal waiting times and faster admissions and discharges, in addition to delivering high quality, patient-focused and affordable care. We also offer flexibility in scheduling operations, and there are zero chances of a procedure getting delayed or cancelled due to the pressures of emergency surgeries,” he explained.

Thumbay Hospital Day Care is a state-of-the-art multispecialty facility envisioned as a center housing all major specialties under one roof, located at the heart of Sharjah in Rolla (behind Rolla Mall). The hospital is the youngest member of the Thumbay academic hospital network, affiliated to the Gulf Medical University, Ajman. 170kg man goes under the knife to lose 50kg in 1 month

A typical work day required Idrees to spend 14-16 hours at the desk

Some may blame genes for their obesity, while some others may point fingers at the easy availability of junk food, but 45-year-old Ajman resident Duraid Idrees names his promotion at work as the real culprit that led him to pack on 170 kgs of weight.

“I already weighed 115 kg at that point, but after starting this new job 4-5 years ago, I started gaining weight drastically. I used to be a site engineer, and would move around a lot for work. But after becoming the operations manager, I was tied to my desk most of the time. I hardly left my desk even for food, and whenever I felt hungry, I would order delivery over the phone and eat it at my desk. I’ve gained a whopping 55 kgs,” Idrees said.

A typical work day required Idrees to spend 14-16 hours at the desk. “I could never eat on time, and once at work, there were no fixed mealtimes. One day I would eat at 8am, the next day at 10 am, and on the third, at 2pm!”

Once, after a severe stomach ache, Idrees was taken to the emergency ward of the Thumbay Hospital in Ajman. He weighed 170kgs by then and stones were found in his gall bladder.

Dr. Tamer Saafan, bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon at Thumbay Hospital, who was handling Idrees’ case, said that he found Idrees very dejected and without hope of ever getting back into shape.

“The patient has been obese for the last 15 years and although he tried hard to reduce weight by following various diets, he failed. He was also on the verge of developing diabetes and was hypertensive, due to his obesity. He just could not move around much. That’s when we decided to go in for a weight-loss procedure called Sleeve Gastrectomy (involving reducing the size of the stomach only, without any intestinal bypass or artificial device),” Dr Saafan told Khaleej Times.

“Since his bladder was also full of stones, we decided to do two procedures simultaneously – Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) and Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (a procedure in which the gall bladder is removed by laparoscopic techniques) in the same session.”

Although it was a complex case, they had to do both the procedures from the same openings on the patient’s body, and were able to complete both surgeries successfully in 2.5 hours, the doctor added.

What added to the complexity was the patient’s size. “Since he was extremely obese, the instrument was not reaching his abdomen, but we managed it.” The patient lost 14kgs in just a week after the surgery and aims to lose around 50kgs in a month.

Talking about the new diet that Dr Saafan set for the patient, he said: “He has to follow a week by week diet with fluids in the first week; mashed or grated food in the second week; the third week can include a soft diet (not hard to digest) and in the last week he can resume a normal diet.”

The patient was asked to follow a few other instructions. “He must drink lot of water during the day, cannot eat and drink at the same time, has to avoid sweets and high calorie food, and has to increase his intake of proteins now that his stomach is small; we don’t want him to lose muscle but lose fat,” the doctor pointed out.

The next important tip from Dr Saafan is not just for his patient, but for all of us: stop eating just before you feel completely full. “Do not eat a full stomach, was my advice to Idrees. You must never overeat, as it burdens your stomach beyond its capacity.”

Idrees’ sons – aged 20 and 15 – said their father’s surgery was a big lesson for them. “We definitely don’t ever want to go through what our father did. We will ensure to keep fit and active,” they said.
